How Social Media Has Impacted Fashion Trends

Every decade had its main fashion trends that stayed for the full 10 years, we all know 70’s hippy, 80’s neon, 90’s grunge, and y2k futuristic with a retro edge, but what about the 2010s. 2010 to 2012 was still y2k style, 2013 to 2016 was all boy bands, and then 2017 to 2019 were all repeats of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. It was all over the place, and so far 2021 hasn’t been any different, starting with y2k fashion, then the 90’s, and finally its own style with hints of both the 90s and ’00s. 

Social media was basically nonexistent before 2010, which makes me think that it may have had an impact on these sudden fashion trend changes. A lot of the trends that popped up in the 10’s were started by a celebrity. We all remember One Direction and its influence on fashion from 2014 to 2016, and more recently when Kanye West started the Yeezy slides trend. There are plenty of celebrity started trends, and for the most part, social media platforms are what made the world know about them. 

High-end fashion brands also followed the majority of these trends instead of going their own way. You can see in Gucci’s 2010 fall ready-to-wear show that they still had aspects of y2k fashion, with an attempt to create a new style for a new decade. However, in their fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection, you see lots of sheer materials and bright colours, not at all what people were wearing then. In Diane Von Furstenburg’s 2017 spring ready-to-wear collection you notice the trends of 2017 show. In spring shows from this year, you can see the y2k style that was very much a trend among celebrities and teens alike. 

Celebrities have also had a big role in making these trends happen. Younger celebrities that have a big impact on fashion amongst teens, like Gigi Hadid and Dua Lipa can be spotted in the clothes that are all the rage right now. Wide leg jeans, oversized crew neck sweatshirts, baby tees, and baguette bags. Nevertheless, stores like Brandy Melville have also changed and created fashion trends mainly among teens. From 2015 to 2017, Zara was big, and shaped fashion for the amount of time it was popular. 

Overall, there are 3 main things creating and changing fashion from 2010 till now. Those things are celebrities, popular stores, and social media. High-end fashion brands like Gucci and LV used to shape what was trendy and what wasn’t, but it seems like they are just following along with the trends. Celebrities have become more and more influential in the fashion realm, and continue to create trends and decide what is and what isn’t what people are wearing. Popular stores that pop up every few years are also known to lead to what people should be wearing. However, it seems like social media is what is making this all happen, what is making the celebrities’ outfits appear around the globe, what is making stores popular, and what is deciding what trends are.

Whether it is simple, “Your outfit is very bold,” with hints of disgust. Or the straight up, “What are you wearing?” The one sentence that can send you over the edge.

Getting yourself out of the house and doing something that isn’t staring at your phone all day can be tricky, especially during a pandemic. But because teens need to be social and not trapped in one space for a while, getting out and doing things is important. Also seeing your friends and getting boba is VERY important. Whether that was going for a jog, or hanging out with friends, getting out of the house, made me much happier and easygoing. Now, because of vaccines, there is less worry with getting together with people outside of your household and going to stores.
